Vedanthangal – Paradise for Bird Lovers

Vadanthangal is a city in the Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu. More than the city as a whole, the place is known for its Bird Sanctuary; Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary which is home to at least 30,000 local/ migratory birds during migratory season and is considered as paradise for bird lovers.

When to visit?


The best time to have any wildlife encounter is the breeding season; that begins late in October and lasts till February. At this time, the animals are seen in their natural habitat and you can witness parental care of some of wild animals which is very rare to watch.

  • Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary:

 The sanctuary was established in 1936 and is indeed the oldest water bird sanctuary of the country with the forest land area of 30 hectares mainly having grove of Barringtonia and Acacia nilotica trees, dry evergreen scrub and thorn forests. This sanctuary are harbors cormorants, egrets, grey heron, open-billed stork, darter, spoonbill, white lbnis & some migratory birds like garganey teals, shovellers, pintails, stilts, sandpipers etc. As the weather is very much pleasant in the winters, so nature walks and jungle safari are enjoyed best there.

How to reach ?

By Road:

The best way to reach the city is by road only. It has great connectivity of roads from Chennai (58kms) and Chengalpattu (30kms). Being a popular tourist spot, there are ply of private & government buses (state buses) buses that do to and fro from Chennai & Chengalpattu to Vedanthangal on daily basis.

By Railways:

You have 2 options to choose from; Chengalpattu railway station, distanced at approx 25kms and Chennai junction located 58kms away. Visitors in/ around of the city chose Chengalpattu railhead and rest prefers Chennai junction because it is easily accessible from any part of the country. From station, you can either take a bus, sharing cabs or private car ride.

By Airways:

The nearest airport is the Chennai international airport. As we all know the capital city has great access to all the major parts of the country and from there, you can either choose local taxis, bus or pre-booked cabs via National Highway 45.
