Thekkady is a tourist place situated in Idukki district of Kerala. Thekkady is filled with unending hills and plantations of spice. The scent of spices will give a warm welcome to the tourists. Another main feature of Thekkady is that no one will be going back without seeing elephants. Thekkady is a place in the Periyar forest and also it is one of the finest wildlife reserves in India. Facilities for trekking and mountain walks is also available in here. Other wild animals such as deers and Bisons are also mainly seen here. The periyar wildlife sanctuary where Thekkady is located is famous for its evergreen forest and glass lands. An artificial lake which forms a part of the Mullaperiyar Dam is also here. One can reach the sanctuary by trekking,boating of jeep safari. Although Thekkady provides with an experience which you cannot recieve from any other places than in Kerala.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary:[See Map] The rich jungles of Thekkady is one of the most wonderful and unique natural wildlife reserves.It lies close to the plantations in Thekkady.The sanctuary is spread across 750 km.This sanctuary is a centre of attraction to foriegners because its geographical diversity and the scenic beauty of wildlife.The artificial lake formed from the mullaperiyar dam adds beauty to the park.
Kumily:[See Map] This is a town near Thekkady.All the tourists will visit Kumily for sure because of the wide variety of items availed there.It is an important shopping centre where many types of spices are available.Accomodation facilities are not available in Thekkady but in Kumily.Kumily is only 4km from Thekkady.
Mangaladevi Temple:[See Map] This temple is situated at about 1350 metres above sea level.You can reach here from Thekkady,this place in only 15km from thekkady.It is a n ancient temple hidden in the dense forest.The feeling one will recieve while walking through this temple and surrondings cannot be expressed.You will be welcomed with cool breze.Visitors are only allowed to enter the temple on Chithra Pournami Festival day.

Plantation Tours: This facility is availed here by the “District Tourism Information Office, Thekkady.” Plantation tours are a unique experience one can only get in here.Tours through cardomom plantations,pepper plantations,coffee and tea plantations,tea factories are availed here.
Elephant Rides: Every foriegners who reach here opt to do this because it is something that you should never miss.Forest department of Thekkady offers this facility.The department conduct this in a reasonable fare of Rs.30 per person.The elphant tour will be about 30 mins.Booking can be done from Wildlife Preservation Office.
Boating Facility:The tourism department of Kerala offers Boating facilities through the lake where you can have close view of the Reserve.The boat used here is deck boats in which upper deck and lower deck are available.you wil get a more beautiful view from upper deck.

The Mulla Periyar Irrigation Dam, an engineering marvel of its time in 1895, inundated a large tract of forestland and created a 26-sq km lake, which is today the main watering hole of the Reserve. Thekkady is located about 257 km (160 mi) from Trivandrum, 141 km from Madurai City and Madurai Airport, 145 km from Cochin International Airport and 114 km from Kottayam railway station. Thekkady is located near to Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. The sanctuary is famous for its dense evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savanna grass lands.
