Kolli Hills – The Mountain of Death

Kolli Hills also known as Kolli Malai is a small but a deadly mountain range located in the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. The mountains have an elevation of 1300 m or 4300 ft above sea level and land area of approximately 280 km sq. The hills are named after Goddess Ettukkai Amman (also known as Kollipavai) guarding the hills with her divine protection. The mountain range is a site of pilgrimage site and is believed to have a secret path to the Shiva temple in Rasipuram and the Shiva temple (Arappaleeswarar ) is believed to be existed during the Sangam period. The Koli Malai hills are named as mountains of death because of having 70 hairpin bends. Apart from the tourism and hospitality, the major occupation of the people here is farming, and some of the predominant exports include black pepper, jackfruit, pineapple, banana & some spices. The place is renowned for its two most popular sites; Agaya Gangai waterfalls and Arapaleeswarar temple.

When to visit?

The hills are covered by the green forests during spring and monsoon harboring coffee plantations and fruit orchards. If you want to enjoy the scenic views, hiking, trekking clubs, and meditation experts classes then the ideal time to visit this place is right after monsoons.

How to go?


By Road:


Kolli Hills lies close to Chennai and Salem and these two cities are linked to Madurai and Trichy by private as well as state buses. Kolli hill is distanced at about 88kms from Salem bus stand and a private car ride will costs you around Rs. 1100. So it is very much advisable to take city bus to the destination.

By Railways:


The closest serving railhead to the city is Salem junction distanced at approximately 90kms away. Trichy is also located somewhat close to the hills. From station you can take a bus or private cab which will cost you approx Rs. 1200 per head.

By Airways:


The nearest serving airport is Trichy – Tiruchirappalli international airport located 115kms away. The Trichy airport is well accessible from major cities of India and from airport you can opt for bus or pre-booked cabs to the destination.
