+ Kumarakom is a tourist spot situated in kottayam district of kerala. Kumarakom lies on the backdrop of largest fresh water lake in Kerala, which is Vembanad Lake. Kumarakom is a cluster of small islands in Vembanad Lake.

Kumarakom is a favourite place for many migratory birds, thus the bird sanctuary in Kumarakom is a very good place for those who love bird watching. Kumarakom is also home for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Kumarakom attracts foreigners towards it’s back water tourism. It is one of the best place opted by tourists for leisure. Boating and Fishing facilities are also available here. The panoramic view of backwaters and coconut groves gives a beautiful feeling. The migratory birds here are a pleasant  view to tourists. And many of the birdwatchers are attracted to Kumarakom by these birds.

Facilities for houseboats and Rice barges (kettuvallom) are also availed here by the Kerala Tourism Department. Kumarakom has a very moderate climate throughout the year. This place is very favourable for cultivation, thus coconut groves and paddy fields are seen everywhere. There are presence of several luxury and small resorts which provides facilities like boating, fishing and a very beautiful view of Vembanad lake. It is a great experience, staying in houseboats.

Vembanad [See Map], the largest backwater in Kerala, is habitat for many marine and freshwater fish species and it teems with ‘Kumarakom Karimeen’ (pearl spotted fish), Konju (tiger prawns), Njandu (crabs), Chemeen (prawns) and many more. The recipes made with these fishes are one of the best fish recipes in the world. No one could explain the experience of visiting Kumarakom. One should feel it. Responsible Tourism practices of kerala was first implemented in Kumarakom. Kuarakom has been declared by the Kerala Government as Special Tourism Zone.
