One of the most visited places in Jammu, Mubarak Mandi is a grand ancient palace located at Jammu in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. It is near the banks of river Tawi. The Mubarak Mandi Palace was the official house or residence of the Dogra Dynasty kings. This was Dogra Dynasty’s main seat till the king moved out to another palace in 1925. The palace is a large complex of a number of buildings, where one of the first buildings were built in the year 1824. Each one of the Maharajas of
the Dogra Dynasty added more buildings as they ruled thus extending the complex. Due to this, it took more than 150 years for the Dogra rulers to complete the palace as we see it today. The palace is a mixture of Mughal, Rajasthani and European baroque architecture.
The ancient complex has a number of large courtyards with several sized and shaped buildings. The buildings of the complex include Darbar Hall , the Pink Palace, Royal Courts, Nawa Mahal, Hawa Mahal, the Toshakhana palace and many more buildings. As the Dogra Dynasty’s rulers slowly moved out of the palace and settled in the new palace, the place started to ruin and the palace lay abandoned. Nowadays the parts of the palace are used as Government Offices, courts and the Dogra Art Museum. It is at the pink hall of the palace and hols a number of miniature paintings of the region. Sheesh Mahal one of the building of the palace is made fully out of glass. The olden palace has witnessed fire more than 36 times and became a victim of two major earthquakes i.e, 1980 and in 2005. It is declared as a heritage site by the government.
