Bhoothathankettu is a well known dam and a tourist place in Eranakulam district of Kerala.The dam has its own specialities.Unshaped stones which are large in size are places on both sides of Periyar to build the dam.This place has been a very tragic place where many incidents of immense pain had occured.Bhoothankettu provides boating facilities which include speed boats and pedal boats.and another experience a person could recieve is the nature walk through the thick jungle of old Bhoothathankettu.The dam has also children’s park and many other picnic spots.The dam was believed to be build by ghosts,from which the dam recieved the name”Bhoothathankettu” which means “Ghost’s Fort”.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. The main attraction towards this area is the wide variety of birds seen in here. This sanctuary consists of about 500 species of birds.Several rare birds are found here.Thattekad Sanctuary is located just 30 km from Kochi. Thattekad gives you a nature centric experience by the presence of thick forest and the bamboos. This is a best place for those who are interested in calmness and bird watching.Several Species of forest birds and water birds visit Thattekad which makes it unique.
The birds mainly seen in Thattekad Bird Sanctuary are Indian Cuckoo, Jerdin Nightjars, Large-billed Warbler, Jerdons Nightjar, Collared Scops Owl, Darters, Cormorants, Whiskered Terns, Frogmouths ,Pompadour Green Pigeonand Yellow-browed Bulbuls.Thus this place is a heaven for Ornithologists.
