Sonmarg is situated at Ganderbal district in jammu & Kashmir. Sonmarg really means meadow of Gold. It is a hill station. The area is blended with beautiful meadows and flower carpeted land.
Sonmarg only has a population of 392 people. Sonmarg is not accessible during the winter season due to the heavy avalanches and snow fall. Sonmarg has no other permanent settlement. Kolhoi Glacier and Machoi Glacier lies near the Sonmarg with some peaks above 5000 meters. Sonmarg is a very attractive place for tourists as it offers access and view to different Himalayan peaks. Many tourists visit the area yearly. Sonmarg is at an altitude of 2800 meters. Historically it was important as it was one of the gateway of ancient the silk route.
The official language of Sonmarg is Urdu. 15 km from Sonmarg there is one of the highest road pass, The Zojila pass. Sonmarg is famous for Meadows, Mountains, Alpine Flowers, Pine and Fir Forests.

Attractions In Sonmarg

Nilagrad/Nilagrad River : This is a place where The Indus river and a mountain river merges. Due to some reason the color of water flowing through the river is pure Red. This gives the river a magnificent view, and thus makes up a major tourist attraction. The locals believe that the river has curative powers. Thus the villagers go and bath in the river every once in a week. Nilagrad is 6 kilometers from Sonmarg.

Krishnasar Lake: Krishnasar Lake is situated at an altitude of 3801 meters and is one of the magnificent lakes in which are in the list of Himalayan lakes. It is a high altitude alpine lake with the background of alpine forests and snow covered mountains. It has a length of a kilometer while its width is a half kilometer. Trout fishing has made this location very famous and is a favorite area for

tourists. Krishnasar Lake, during the winter season freezes and forms a clear sheet of ice.

Baltal: 15 km north of Sonamarg is a camping ground for pilgrims which is known as Baltal. Baltal is near Sind River at the base of Zojila pass. This is a small valley and provides shorter route to Amarnath Caves. This is a base camp for pilgrims who are en route to Amarnath and it is an astonishing grassland which makes it a perfect spot.

Gadsar Lake: The highest lake in kashmir, at a height of 5000 meters, the Gadsar Lake which is situated at the outskirts of the Sonmarg. The lake has a huge trout fish number. It is one of the important parts in Sonmarg.

Yusmarg: The best place where you can find a perfect picnic spot. It gives a good view of mountain ranges and a good reddish water body.

Zoji La Pass: One of the highest road passes in the world, just about 10 kilometers from the
Sonmarg. It connects Srinagar to Leh with the national highway.
